For couples and friends

A friendly reality check for everyday arguments.

You each write your side of the story, separately. Other people read both and weigh in. Then each of you commits to one small thing you'll do differently.

“Phone face down, one check allowed. Then you both get what you need.”

How it works

  1. 1

    Write your sides, separately

Each of you writes privately. Neither sees the other's version until both are in, so nobody gets to interrupt.

  2. 2

    Both approve

You each read exactly what voters will see. Nothing is published unless you both say yes.

  3. 3

    People weigh in

For 24 hours, people vote: one of you, both of you, or you're arguing about different things.

  4. 4

    Make up

When voting closes, each of you writes one thing you'll do differently. That's the part that helps.

Not in an argument? Be a fair voice in someone else's.

Read both sides and vote. Then guess what most people will say. Every time you read the crowd right, you earn a point and climb the ranks. You're rewarded for understanding people, not for agreeing with them.

What we promise

Private until you both agree

Drafts stay between the two of you. Either of you can stop it from being published.

Nicknames only

Voters see the nicknames you choose, never your name or email.

Personal details removed

Emails, phone numbers, links and @handles are hidden automatically before anyone else sees them.

Not for situations involving harm

If something sounds like fear, threats or abuse, it isn't put to a vote. You're shown people who can help.

Why I built this

I made Vota to help with arguments, between couples and between friends.

When both people write down their version, it gets easier to understand what the other one actually means. And sometimes an outside opinion from people with no stake in it is exactly what's needed to move on.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Starting cases, voting and guessing are free.

Do we both need an account?

Yes, so only the two of you can write your sides. Signing in takes a few seconds: enter your email and click the link we send. No password.

Who can see our case?

Nobody, until you both approve. Then either everyone on Vota, or only people you send the link to. You choose when you start.

What if the other person doesn't want to publish?

Then it isn't published. Both of you have to say yes.

Talk it through. Then settle it.

It takes about five minutes to start a case together.
